About Ison Village
The History of Ison in the Village Name
William Ison
The Village is named after a local pioneer whose historical 1860‟s Mud-Brick homestead occupied the Village site for over 140 years… William Ison, a 23yo small settler from Cambridge, England arrived in Australia with his wife, around 1855; and eventually settled in Werribee. By around 1860 he had built his mud-brick cottage on this land in Bulban Road, which was his farm. He died in 1923.
After this, the property was occupied by several other Werribee families, until demolished in 2002, prior to the current ownership of the land. The mud-brick house was of symmetrical design with verandahs to all sides, with a central hallway; the inner walls were also made from mud-bricks. The bricks were originally made from a nearby swamp (now dried out). The homestead was an important illustration of the life of the small settler around Werribee in the mid to late 1800‟s, and its survival for such a long time was uncommon; and therefore significant enough to be placed on the register of the National Estate (Historic).
To commemorate the significance of the mud-brick homestead and heritage of the site, a interpretative display is located in reception at Ison Village, 150-168 Bulban Road, Werribee.
